Playin' Like a Kid!

Theme of this blog post: fun!

Last week we started an Adult Level 1 Parkour/Freerunning Class at Apex Movement. I was a little unsure of what to expect, especially considering I had a hard time understanding what Parkour was myself. I've seen the crazy videos of people jumping from roof to roof and climbing up walls, but I knew better than to expect that from a beginners class for adults. According to the website, "Parkour is an art of movement in which you train the body and mind to overcome obstacles."

Our first class began by measuring some benchmark skills. I'll admit it was quite the challenge, and I struggled to do even one pull up. Next, we learned quadrupedal movements (QM). The first resembles crawling on your hands and feet moving your opposite hand and foot together. At some point, we'll move to doing this on a bar. Finally, we moved onto the obstacle course. It immediately reminded me of when I was a kid and often made up obstacle courses on the playground and raced my friends on them. The course included running through a tunnel, climbing over several boxes, and balancing on some rails through the "hot lava." The time ended once you made it to the top of and eight foot tall box. I left with such a high that carried over into the next day, and I was so excited to return.

During our second class, we learned how to do Parkour rolls and worked on correct pull up form. I laughed to myself when they told us to go warm up with 5 pull ups before having us complete a pull up circuit. My goal is to get to four by the end of the five week class, since that's the recommended amount to move onto Level 2. I'm noticing that even though I'm having a hard time with the basic skills, I seem to do fairly well with the Parkour moves. According to the instructors, I'll be scaling a rooftop like a ninja in no time! Our next class focused on basic gymnastics including hand stands, cartwheels, and roundoffs. In an upcoming class, we will practice these moves on the vault, and I'm hoping we'll get to try out the foam pit! On my way home today, I saw two boys doing cartwheels over the cement divider in front of the school. It definitely reinforced the idea that everyone does Parkour as kids and we tend to grow out of it as we get older.

This past weekend, we went to Steamboat Springs with some friends. We went for a four mile hike up Mad Creek Trail. There was a historic barn at the top of the hike, and I even practiced my QM moves on the surrounding fence.

Later that day, we went to the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. We spent the rest of the night hanging out, and having fun. There may have even been a cartwheel or two down the middle of the road.

Gettin' There

Our deck is coming along pretty well, and although it's still not quite finished, I'm feeling more hopeful about our yard being finished. It's been taking awhile due to the weather and the contractor running out of parts. We have plans for stamped concrete once the deck is finished. It ended up a bit bigger than I expected, but I'm looking forward to spending time on it.

Two weeks ago I was able to go Imperial Flyers again. I went by myself, so the pictures were lacking. I worked on Bird's Nest and was able to make the catch. I even made it into the official YouTube video!

We made homemade pizza last week and went a bit overboard on the toppings. We ended up with three varieties: Chicken Pesto w/ Sundried Tomatoes, Sausage & Peppers, and Margherita w/ Chicken and Peppers.

Eric has been at home this week due to the government furlough, and I'm really enjoying having a "stay at home boyfriend." I had conferences this week, so I was working 13 hour days and not getting home until late. It was so exhausting, but it was amazing having dinner ready for me and the house picked up when I got home each night. My favorite was the homemade Beer Battered Tacos w/ Guacamole.

A coworker gave us a giant zucchini from their garden, so I made Chocolate Zucchini Bread. Since I was already taking the time to make it, I also made Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Bread. They both turned out pretty well and it will be nice to have breakfast already made for the next few days.

Campin'

Last weekend we went camping in Wyoming at Curt Gowdy State Park. We went mountain biking both days and I really enjoyed the trails. They were difficult, but there was enough that was ridable to keep me motivated. There was a small "playground" where I  rode up and over a giant rock. I was really reluctant at first and even chickened out on my first try, but once I did it, it wasn't so bad and I did it several more times.

It was a challenge to push myself to keep up with the boys, but still feel comfortable on the bike. I did fall going up a switchback and ended up with a massive bruise on my arm. On the way home, we took a detour to Little Man Ice Cream, which is becoming a favorite any time we're headed home from up north.

It's been raining all week, so we haven't done much in the yard. I moved a bit more dirt to level out the piles behind the wall, but it's a slow process. Earlier this week, the deck was demolished, so hopefully we will have it installed soon.

Enjoyin' the Weekend

I'm getting back into being at work and have had two full weeks with the kids. That being said, I definitely enjoyed the extra day off for the holiday weekend. It seemed to be a good balance between being productive, getting some rest, and having fun. We spent some time in the yard and while Eric finished the wall, I started filling in the dirt. I know it may not look like it yet, but those dirt piles are definitely smaller than before.

The next step will be replacing the deck and we're looking forward to not having to do that part ourselves. Once that's finished, we'll move on to the patio and the grass. We'll see how much motivation we have left as to whether we'll do the patio ourselves or hire someone else.

We returned to Imperial Flyers for a drop in session today after attending the Open House last weekend. It's a trapeze club that I think could be a fun activity while I'm off in the summer. It's about 35 minutes from our house, but I think it could be worth it. They have an annual circus in August. How cool would it be to perform in their circus next year? I worked on the split today and had three catches, some more successful than the others.

This was my fifth time total, and so far I've been able to make catches from knee hang, heels off, whip, straddle whip, and now split. Unless they have another idea for next time, I might try bird's nest. I'd also like to try straddle whip again and make it look a bit cleaner than before.

Mountain Bikin'

After returning from a fantastic vacation, I had one last week off before returning to work. I tried to balance having fun with accomplishing some chores I don't usually get to while working.

We've gone on three mountain bike rides over the past two weekends, and I've been working on gaining confidence with my clip-less pedals. Our first of the rides was to Dakota Ridge, which I felt was way out of my ability level. I ended up walking my bike for a large portion of the ride and ending the ride a bit frustrated. Later in the weekend, we went to Alderfer/3 Sisters and I felt it was more within my range - still challenging enough for me to push myself, but not too hard that I couldn't do anything. I had a lot of fun on a long smooth section with several water logs where I could practice my jumps.

We were short on time today, so we drove to the top of Mount Falcon and rode several of the trails up there. Eric let me borrow his bike for a big chunk of the last two rides, and I found myself feeling much more comfortable and attempting sections I wouldn't have on my bike. I'm thinking it might be fun to get a better bike for myself, but I'm still not ready to commit to spending the money.

We've also made some progress with our yard. Not only did we receive approval from the HOA to rebuild our deck, we built most of the retaining wall. It's nice to be in the "put back together" phase where we can start to see how everything will come together. Once we finish the wall, we will build the patio and have the deck redone. The final step will be to put in grass and redistribute the rocks. I'm looking forward to when we can have an outdoor BBQ in our completed yard.

Flyin' High

From Hawaii, I went on to Washington to visit my sister. We had a great time hanging out. We went to Olympia from the airport and went for a walk around the capitol.

The next day, we went for a ten mile hike on the Lower Quilcene Trail. It was a beautiful hike, and I felt pretty accomplished.

We went to Seattle for a DEXA body scan, which was an interesting experience. We both received similar advice of adding strength training into our workouts. On the way home, we stopped at Mora Ice Cream for a treat. Despite the look of the picture, we both had single scoops, just split with two flavors.

We tried to alternate activity days with restful days, so we spent some time at home the next day watching tv, playing on our phones, and dancing with the Xbox. My sister also made some amazing homemade lemon drop martinis.

One of the most exciting parts of the trip was learning how to trapeze at Emerald City Trapeze Arts. I learned the knee hang on my first day, and after one missed attempt, successfully made the catch at the end of the class. I was offered a buy one get one deal at the end of class, so we set up two more for my trip. During the other two classes, I learned heels off and the whip. I loved it and would definitely do it again (and again, and again).

From trapeze class, we went to the dragon boat races where we met up with one of our cousins, her daughter, and her nephew. It was nice catching up and watching their team win.

My sister was housesitting, so we took an overnight trip to Port Townsend. We had drinks, saw a movie, ate an amazing halibut dinner at Silverwater Cafe, and ended the day with a cone from Elevated Ice Cream.

After our night in Port Townsend, we took a day trip to Silverdale, and ended the evening with some Xbox dancing and a movie.

During another trip to Seattle for trapeze, we stopped at Pegasus for some morning snacks and coffee. After trapeze, we walked around Pike's Place Market and had some pretty impressive cupcakes. That night, my sister made Mai Tais, which were way better than the ones in Hawaii.

For my last night in Washington, we met up with two of my sister's friends at AJAX Cafe. They have hats all over the wall, so we had fun trying on a variety of hats. We had a great dinner and enjoyed the evening.

I had so much fun and I'm glad I had tons of time to relax during my three week trip.

Catchin' Waves

This past week was our big trip to Hawaii. We spent a total of four nights in Honolulu/Waikiki, and four nights on the North Shore if Oahu. We spent a lot of time walking and exploring the first day. We spent a lot of time trying to find a good, local place to eat, but were disappointed that most everything was a chain that we had at home. We ended up at Arancino for lunch and McGillyCuddy's for dinner. The next morning, we headed to the North Shore for surf camp.

Our first day surfing was good, but I'll admit i was a bit disappointed at how small the waves were. We took a hike our first day on the North shore. Once we reached the top, we had panoramic views of Sunset Beach and Pipeline. From our condo, we could walk to Turtle Bay, and caught the sunset as we walked along the reef.

The next day, I was able to catch two waves on my own while surfing, which was exciting since that was one of the things we worked on at our last surf camp in Costa Rica. We went stand up paddleboarding that evening with the sea turtles. I was amazed at how many there were and had to make quite an effort to stay the required six feet away.

I was able to try a smaller board for the rest of the week, and I enjoyed having the challenge. It was a bit more wobbly, but I felt more comfortable by the end of the week. That night we went on a sunset catamaran ride, and after the ride we ate in town at Haliewa Joe's.

The next day we went for an early stand up paddleboard trip in the ocean.

We also went to the weekly farmer's market and had the most amazing ice cream sandwiches. Mine was lilikoi (passion fruit) ice cream with orange zest cookies.

We ended the day listening to live music at Turtle Bay while watching the sunset and drinking a Mai Tai.

Throughout the week, we also spent a lot of time at the pool hanging out and reading. We took yoga twice and had our first real massages. There was a photographer in the water with us on our final day surfing, so we were able to get some close up pictures.

Our first day back in Honolulu, we started the day at Pearl Harbor.

We had the opportunity to take a boat out to the Arizona, which was pretty interesting.

We spent the afternoon snorkeling with fish and sea turtles. We agreed that this was a highlight of the trip. The turtles were so close and there were tons of fish.

We did a ton of walking the next day on our excursion to Leonard's Bakery and Diamond Head Crater. Leonard's is known for their Portuguese Malasadas. We couldn't decide what to get, so we ordered one of each!

Our hike up Diamond Head was much busier than I expected, but we did manage to get a few pictures at the top.

We ended our last full day at the Paradise Cove Luau.

Overall, it was a nice trip, and I'm glad we had the experience of going.

Eatin' Street Food

Yesterday we did a walking tour of street food in Denver. We visited five different locations, some of which we had never heard of. We took the W line light rail for the first time.

The first stop was Caveman Cafeteria. They specialize in Paleo food but do have several "Cheat Day" exceptions. Their target audience is Crossfit members, and they got their start with Kickstarter earlier this year.

Wagyu Beef Slider on a Pretzel Bun w/ Demiglaze

Bistro Steak w/ Mushrooms and Demiglaze

Our next stop was Basic Kneads Pizza. We have tried them before outside Prost Brewing Company and liked them so much we went back for a second pizza. My favorite that we tried on the tour was the Sweet Thai Chili Chicken. The 16th street setup is their newest and is equipped with a full wood burning oven. In order to accommodate the ovens, they build the trailers themselves in a backyard.

Pepperoni & Margherita Pizza

Next up was Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs. We've heard of them several times and seen them on several Food Network/Cooking Channel shows, but had never tried them. We tried four different types of sausages. My favorite was the wild boar with apricots and cranberry. I knew they had some unique menu items, but didn't expect to be eating rattlesnake.

Biker Jim's exotic menu.

The "Off the Menu Special"
Pheasant and Rattlesnake w/ Cream Cheese & Coca Cola Onions

Our dessert stop was Petey Bird Ice Cream Sandwiches. This is the company's first summer. It was interesting to hear the owner left his engineering job to pursue ice cream sandwiches and he designed the bike cooler himself. The original "mini" size sandwiches come two to a package, or you can upgrade to a large. I would love to go back and get two mini packages so we can have two different flavors.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate

Chocolate Chip Walnut and Banana

Our final stop was EVOO Marketplace where we sampled tons and tons of specialty olive oils and balsamic vinegars. The combinations were endless, but we ended up purchasing two we've had before due to their versatility. In the future, I might like to buy a fruitier balsamic.

Overall, it was a good day and I'm glad I bought the deal. I was feeling a bit guilty for skipping kickboxing, but I think it's more because I enjoy going and missed it. It may have also been because I was on a great workout streak and hadn't missed a day in July. I'm still not sure if I'll go again since I won't be going for the next three weeks and it was only a ten week deal. We finished off the evening running some last minute errands for our Hawaii trip. It's almost here!
